Mother

Mother Goddess is a term used to refer to a Goddess who represents motherhood, devotion, fertility, nurturing mature love, creation or who embodies the bounty of the Earth.  When equated with the Earth or the natural world such Goddesses are sometimes referred to as Great Goddess, Mother Earth or as the Earth Mother.  The ability to forgive and provide for her children and put them before herself is the essence of a good mother.  She is described as Mother Earth, Mother Nature or the Creator of all life.  And this is just a snippet of what can be found in, 'Who Are Your Divine Friends?'.

Cave paintings and rock carvings of Goddesses, some as old as 35,000 years BC or earlier, depict the Divine life-giving Goddess.  The Venus of Willendorf is perhaps the most well-known of these ancient Mother Goddess deities.  Pre-Christian cultures like the Norse and Roman societies honored the Deities of women, with their shrines and temples.  Most of the first images of the Goddess show an abundant, round, full figured being.  Pele, Gaia, Isis, Frigg, Demeter, Brigid, Aphrodite, Venus, Tara, and Mary are among the Goddesses who personify the mother phase of the Divine Feminine.

The history of the Ancient Norse people is complex and incomplete.  In day to day life, most women presided over the farm work, housework, weaving, and childcare.  They were also shown to do some business and commerce of their own; scales have been found in women’s graves.  Hearth and home bounded most women's lives, but they had considerable influence within this sphere.  The keys with which many were buried symbolize their responsibility for, and control over, the distribution of food and clothing to the household.  In handfasting (marriage) rites today, keys are often exchanged.

Goddess of Mothers

Goddess of Mothers,
Mother of Gods,
You keep all together:
Houses and hearts,
Family, finances, food
Balancing needs,
Chores and duty,
Resting and feasting.
Hidden hub of your husband,
Mother and manager,
Keep our hearth fire burning
And the living flame of our love!

Song for Mothers´ Night

Hail to you Mothers, mortal and breathing,
Hail to you Mothers, immortal, divine.
Hail to you, Disir of our kinfolk,
Hail to your womb, the wellspring of life.

Many have come and many will follow,
Passing the sacred mystery on,
Gift of our living through generations,
Gift of our loving, mother to child.

Hail to you Mothers, mortal and breathing,
Hail to you Mothers, immortal, divine.
Hail to you, Disir of our kinfolk,
Hail to your womb, the wellspring of life.

Hail you who guard our garth and our temples,
Hearth fire's warders, Wise-Women all.
Your passion and patience now we shall honor.
Pass on the cup, and drink of their life.

Hail to you Mothers, mortal and breathing,
Hail to you Mothers, immortal, divine.
Hail to you, Disir of our kinfolk,
Hail to your womb, the wellspring of life.

Gratitude for my Mother

Today I turn to you to give you thanks for my mother. With your own gift of life, she bore me in her womb and gave me life. She tenderly, patiently cared for me and taught me to walk and talk. She read to me and made me laugh. No one delighted in my successes more; no one could comfort me better in my failures. I am so grateful for how she mothered me and mentored me, and even disciplined me.

Please bless her and comfort her. Help her loving heart to continue to love and give of herself to others. Strengthen her when she is down and give her hope when she is discouraged.

Most of all on this day, give my mother the graces she most needs and desires today. Thank You!

Super Mom

Mom, you're a wonderful mother,
So gentle, yet so strong.
The many ways you show you care
Always make me feel I belong.

You're patient when I'm foolish;
You give guidance when I ask;
It seems you can do most anything;
You're the master of every task.

You're a dependable source of comfort;
You're my cushion when I fall.
You help in times of trouble;
You support me whenever I call.

I love you more than you know;
You have my total respect.
If I had my choice of mothers,
You'd be the one I'd select!

She is fertility and fecundity, abundance and growth and the gaining of knowledge.  Sometimes also called the Queen, as the great Mother she brought forth life and as the terrible Mother she ruled over death and destruction.  She is fulfillment and balance - sexual, social and emotional.  Spring and summer are her domains; as the Earth becomes green and fertile, so does the Mother.

Many different Goddesses have represented the motherhood in one way or another, and some have been associated with the birth of humanity as a whole.  Others have represented the fertility of the Earth.  She reminds us of the importance to love others and ourselves.  When you learn to love with a whole heart, without limit, you will walk in the footsteps of the deities.  It is in this aspect that the Lady is most often worshiped.
