Frigg

Frigg (Frigga, Frija, Fricka), of the Aesir: her name means 'Love,' and she is Odin's wife, and mother to Baldur and Hoor.  She is the Goddess of Civilization and the right Mother of all and protector of children, the All-Mother.  She spins the sacred Distaff of life and is said to know the future, although she will not speak of it.

Like many mothers, she is a peacemaker and mediator in times of strife.  Frigg is frequently pictured as being charming, wearing a girdle hung with household keys and weaving clouds on her spinning wheel.  She had great patience and tolerance, often defending Odin when his actions were questioned.  Frigg was believed to travel in a chariot drawn by a pack of dogs, perfect symbols of fidelity and faithfulness.  She is appealed to help women, Earth, nurses, family, weavers, mothers, marital counseling centers, and love.
She spends her time spinning golden thread or weaving bright colored clouds.  In order to perform this work she made use of a jeweled spinning wheel which shone brightly in the sky known as "Frigg's spinning wheel in the north" and in the south known as Orion's belt/girdle.

And this is just a snippet of what can be found in, 'Who Are Your Divine Friends?'.

Toast to Frigga

Frith-seeker, Wise to fates,
Keeper of the keys of Valhól.

Mother of Æsir, Mourning your son,
Watcher of the weal of all.

We gather in faith, We gather in frith,
And seek your blessing to bestow.

To lady Frigga, Loving mother,
We drink this draught to you!

~ Gary Penzler

A Picture of Frigg

When the moon is full
she opens her vein of wisdom
            for him to drink from.

She is the guardian of lost souls
                         weaver of fate.

There are no paintings
                    no icons
                    of her divine face.

She is the hidden force of knowledge.
Dancing in the shadow
            of her husband´s glory.

She is the Goddess
                    of the Goddesses.

Keeper of secrets
                puller of strings.

~ Birgitta Jonsdottir

Housework Prayer

Lovely Lady Frigga,
as I go about my housework, let me see each job I do
As a way of honoring you and doing my share of the Good Work.

Let me wash away my judgments of others, as I do those loads of laundry,
and may my thoughts of others be as warm as the clothes I fold.

Let me tidy up my mind as I tidy up the newspapers,
Let me sweep away my fears like the dirt from little paws.

May I be as quick with my forgiveness as I am with mop and broom,
Sweeping up the clutter in my heart as in my living room.

May I rinse out pride and ego as I rinse my morning dishes,
And may anger, hate and doubt go down the drain as well.

Please remind me often, lovely Lady Frigga,
That I follow in your path
and that the way I'm called to serve
Is an honor given me, and not below what I deserve.

~ A variation on an anonymous Christian original. Heathen poet unknown.

An Offering to Frigga

Lady of Asgard,
You who hears the secrets of the All-father,
You who holds his heart in your hands,
In you we seek what we need,
And you provide, greatly.
Let us remember your gifts,
And honor you with well wrought work
From our hands and our hearts,
May we aid each other in times of need.

Through you, Frigga, we can learn much,
And in you are mysteries that we seek to understand,
Wind us in your distaff, dole us fair and just fate.
Through you, Frigga, we ask that this life
Be full of love, light, and needed strength
Great Mother, accept our offering,
Not of blood, but of our efforts and devotion,
Our love and desire to honor you

Hail Frigga! Hail Frigga! Hail Frigga!

~ Larisa C Hunter

A series of events occur where the Gods take revenge upon God Loki by binding him and thus furthering the onset of Ragnarok, though Frigg is not mentioned further in lore.  The blessing of Frigg is still invoked for birthing women with a white candle that last burned during the winter solstice, being used as a charm to ensure a safe delivery.  Her friendship can also be honored by helping mothers and children: make peace, find each other, cleaning, feeding or comforting.

After Christianization, mention of Frigg continued to occur in Scandinavian folklore.  In modern times, Frigg has appeared in modern popular culture, in the subject of art, and receives modern veneration in Germanic Neopaganism.

Esbat Full Moon

July 19 is the Full Moon.  An Esbat is a holiday based around a phase of the moon.  Those who celebrate Esbats tend to do so either on the full moon or the new moon (or both).  Because a lunar cycle (the process of the moon going from new – or dark – to full and back again) takes approximately 28 days, Esbats are generally celebrated regularly, either on the full moon, the dark moon, or both.

The Full Moon Esbat is used for banishing, protection and divination workings, also planning, releasing and working with time.  It is during this time that the God becomes the strong Father figure who cares for the Earth and all its creatures.  The Father is the ripeness of manhood and in his prime, a great leader.
Buck Moon of July.  It is normally the month when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur.  It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, for the reason that thunderstorms are most frequent during this time.  Plan a ritual to decide what you will do once your goals have been met.

You will need:
  • teaspoon of rosemary
  • a view of the Full Moon
  • a bowl of water
  • white candle
Go outside to experience the full moon or sit near a window where the full moon shines. Light a white candle to symbolize the light of the full moon.
Cast your circle , hold the bowl in your hands and light it above your head. Chant:
By the shining power of the Lord’s light, this water is purified and made clean.
Set the bowl down where the moon light or candlelight shines upon it. See the reflection of the light on the water’s surface. When the surface of the water is still hold the rosemary in one hand and chant:
Through the cleansing power of the Earth, this herb brings purity.
Add the rosemary to the water, dip a finger into the water and touch each part of your body listed below and say:
Third eye (forehead): may my intentions be pure
Lips: may my words be pure
Chest: may my love be pure
Hands: may my actions be pure
Feet: may my path be pure
Feel the power of the full moon’s light and the cleansing rosemary move through your body bringing light and purity into every cell.
Knowing that this energy will continue to guide and inspire you over the next moon cycle thank the God for his blessing. You can drain the rosemary from the water and keep the consecrated water for future purifications and blessings or pour the water into the Earth outside as and offering.  You can ground yourself to finish the ritual.

Some people have preferences of which moon cycle they like best so experiment to find out which ones you like best.

Jord

Jord is the great Goddess of the wild, primitive and uncivilized areas on Earth.  Fjorgyn, Erda and Hlodyn are considered to be other names for Jord.  Jord is the mother of Thor who was fathered by Odin. Identified as a giantess, she is often referred to in poetry as "Odin's bride".  The traces that have survived of the worship of the personified Earth herself show that she was honored by the Germanic people, though not active in many tales.

Jord is the daughter of Nott, Goddess of the night.  She lives in the area of Jotunheim that is the most fertile and her very touch causes trees to fruit and seeds to sprout.  Jord is the Goddess of all the places there are not under any human control, the Goddess of the mountains, fields, trees, rocks, meadows and other lands with a pure wild spirit.  She reigns over all the uncivilized places.

And this is just a snippet of what can be found in, 'Who Are Your Divine Friends?'.

Correspondences:

Altar: upon cloth of the colors of the Earth place the figure of a pregnant woman, and also the figure of a woman made from the branches of trees, wearing a dress, and a chalice of mead

Color: green

Offerings: clean some small part of the Earth

Pronunciation: 'Yord'

Earth Beneath Us

Bring down my roots, Lady,
Draw me down into your center,
Where the flame still burns.
Earth is a great rock pastry
With a flame at its heart,
Rolled in blue waters,
Wrapped in a dusting of air.

So I saw you, as a child,
But now I see you as a great Mind
Working on a level so subtle
As to elude all our understanding.
You know more than they give
Credit for, when the speculate.
You feel every one of our footsteps
As we make our tiny way
Across your infinite horizons.
~ Fara Dane

Jord

Nothing is wasted on me -
I give, and receive, and recycle.
Even you.
Hills and barrows, my breasts
From which volvas rise,
Breaking my skin
To talk to those still above.

Foolish though you are,
I am fond of you all;
You are me, in a way, after all.
I loathe to let my children leave -
The pull of my gravity, motherly strings.
And when you feel proud
As you travel to Mani
Remember this:
He, too, revolves around me.

~ Michaela Macha

Hail to Jord

Hail to Jord, hallowed Earth Goddess,
Many-hued dis, mother of Thor:
We greet your awakening, your wondrous bright visage
Your nurturing power, providing us life.

Daughter of Night, we now in our gathering
Honor your bounty, and offer our strength
To help your famed son, shielder of Midgard
Protect you from harm, most holy bright Earth.

~ Patrick Covington

Invocation to Jord

Hail, Lady of the Dark Earth,
Fertile mother of the thunder,
Fertile mother of queens,
Fertile mother of many,
We reach out to you each spring
As the green begins its onslaught,
Wishing, asking for your blessing
On these our flocks and fields and lands.
May your touch bring new growth to our lives
As your touch makes the seeds to sprout.
May your touch nurture us into the future
As it has nurtured so many children.
Daughter of the night sky,
Dark as the turned earth;
Daughter of the deep well,
Reflecting stars in its depths,
Your thighs spill forth bounty
From between their dark cleft
Across the yearning land.

~ Order of the Horae

Jord's rule is of ecology.  Living lightly and reverently on the land.  Her friendship can be respected by giving aid to an organization that protects wildlife or cleaning up a wild place.  She can be called upon for many great feats pertaining to the powers of the Earth, from simple spiritual nurturing, fertility rites, manipulating the weather or healing the sick or wounded animals.  To help the safety of wild nature and to restore order to places that were severely damaged by humans.  But she can be a fastidious and wild giantess, so call carefully.

Today, in Marvel, Jord is called Gaea.  She mated with Odin in a cave and gave birth to Thor.  She is one of the elder Gods.  The elder Gods all turned demonic except for Gaea.  She protected Earth.
